Parenting – Time to change

Parenting is a supremely difficult task.  Just when you think you have it all figured out and are successfully showing your child the path – it all changes.  As parents, we need to grow in our parenting as our kids grow in their moral and spiritual development.  Staying engaged is incredibly important.  Please read an article that I have posted below.  Let it move you to think more about how you parent.

Gratitude is a difficult concept in a society where we have been blessed SO MUCH.  Learn to be thankful for simple things – things often taken for granted.  Figure out some ways to re-enforce these concepts during the Holiday Season.  A good question to ask might be: “What are you thankful for this today that you were NOT necessarily thankful for last year/month/week?”  This helps us be in a constant state of discovering new ways that we have been blessed.

Colossians 3

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[b] You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew,circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

Hey Parents – Ferguson presents a great teaching opportunity

The situation in Ferguson, Missouri presents a great teaching opportunity for you and your kids.  Are you taking advantage of it?  There are lessons to learn about respect for authority, racism, our country’s judicial process, media hype, legitimate and illegitimate displays of frustration and a whole host of other lessons.  Are you using this situation?

Perhaps a some good questions to ask would be:

  • If you lived in Ferguson, what would you be doing?
  • If you were a friend of Michael Brown or Darren Wilson, what would you say or have said to them?
  • Did your opinion about what happened change as you heard more and more facts regarding the situation?
  • Why is this case covered so much when there are many killings in our country every day?
  • What is a grand jury?  How does it work?
  • How can YOU make sure this does not happen in your neighborhood or school?

Parents – your kids are forming opinions about this situation EVERY day.  They see you react to situations like this.  Take advantage and steer them in a healthy, positive and spiritual direction.

Interesting Article

I will be posting articles on this site not because I believe every thing that is stated but because a different (and I believe accurate and healthy) point of view is presented.  In our world of “political correctness” we tend to worry too much about offending someone (or at least someone saying that they are offended) and too little about telling the truth.  Your children deal with this every day.  They go to school in an overly protective environment that does not necessarily value the truth.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

MSM Service Project Update

The project was awesome.  We had great participation by over 30 MSM students and parents.  Thanks to the Morrises and the Evans for their help and participation.

We got this feedback from Matt – the house parent: “It went great!  The work looks good, the food and the fellowship went well too.  We enjoyed it, thank you guys for coming out.”
